Paper holds its shape, carries more weight, and is easier to recycle. Plastic is waterproof, sanitary, faster to bag with, and takes up a fraction of the storage space.

KRAFT PAPER BAGS

Paper bags have been used in retail since the mid-1800s, predating plastic bags by more than a century, and they remain a strong contender today with many consumers actively preferring them. Kraft paper bags are made from kraft paper, a sturdy paper produced from softwood pulp. It can be bleached, but it is most often seen in its classic brown color. Kraft paper is stronger than regular paper, with high tear resistance, tensile strength, and durability.

Paper bags hold their shape while open, which makes bagging faster and presentation more attractive. That rigidity also protects delicate items like fresh produce or baked goods that can be crushed in a limp plastic bag. Paper bags can typically carry more weight than a standard plastic bag, are frequently saved and reused by customers, and do not present the suffocation hazard that plastic bags pose for small children and pets.

Their main weakness is water. Uncoated kraft paper absorbs moisture and loses strength quickly when wet, so paper is a poor fit for leak-prone products or outdoor conditions. Paper bags are also heavier and bulkier than plastic, which means they take up significantly more storage space behind the counter.

HANDLE BAGS

The go-to for carryout orders, boutiques, and retail counters. Easy and convenient to carry, often saved and reused by customers, and a natural fit for gift bags and branded presentation.


GROCERY BAGS

Larger bags without handles, sized for checkout lines. The flat bottom and rigid walls make them fast to load, easy to pack full, and stable in a car trunk or delivery tote.


SMALL UTILITY BAGS

Small bags without handles work as disposable lunch bags and are handy at hardware and parts counters for bagging nuts, bolts, fittings, and other small pieces.

PLASTIC T-SHIRT BAGS

Plastic retail bags, commonly called t-shirt bags for their handle shape, were introduced in the 1960s and quickly became the bag of choice for many grocery and retail operations. Most are made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a thermoplastic produced into bag film through a process called blown film extrusion.

Plastic wins on speed and convenience at the checkout. T-shirt bags hang on racks that hold them open, so bagging is fast and efficient. They are waterproof, which protects purchases from the elements and contains leaks from liquid products before they reach a customer's car or clothes. Because plastic is non-porous, it also inhibits the growth of microorganisms, making it a sanitary choice for food items. The bags are lightweight, flexible around oddly shaped goods, and so thin that a full case takes up minimal counter and storage space.

The drawbacks are durability and disposal. Thin plastic bags can split if overloaded, and HDPE bags are typically not accepted in curbside recycling programs, though many grocery chains collect them for store drop-off recycling. Loose plastic bags are also a persistent litter problem and break down into microplastics in the environment.

CHECK YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS

A growing number of states and municipalities have banned single-use plastic bags or added per-bag fees to discourage their use. Before committing to plastic t-shirt bags, confirm the rules in every location where you operate. If plastic is restricted in your area, kraft paper bags are the standard alternative.

Neither bag wins every category. Here is where each one comes out ahead so you can weigh the tradeoffs against what your operation actually needs.


WHERE PAPER WINS

Paper bags hold more weight, stand open on their own for faster and neater bagging, and protect delicate items that plastic lets get crushed. They are widely accepted in curbside recycling, biodegradable, and compostable. Handle versions carry heavy or bulky purchases more comfortably, customers frequently save and reuse them, and they present no suffocation hazard for children or pets. For boutiques and restaurants, paper also simply looks more premium at handoff.

BEST FOR: Presentation, heavy loads, fragile items, and recyclability


WHERE PLASTIC WINS

Plastic bags are waterproof, sanitary, and the lower-cost option per bag. They bag faster on checkout racks, flex around oddly shaped items, and can carry many times their own weight, with easy double-bagging for canned goods and beverages. A case of plastic bags takes up a small fraction of the storage space that the same count of paper bags requires, which matters at busy checkout counters and in cramped back rooms.

MANY RETAILERS STOCK BOTH

Grocery stores and retail shops often offer both bag types and let customers choose at checkout. Stocking both covers wet-item and heavy-item situations, satisfies customer preference on sustainability, and gives you a fallback if regulations change in your area.

WHICH IS BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?

The honest answer is that it depends on which part of the bag's life you look at. Lifecycle studies weigh the raw materials, energy, and water used in production against recyclability, reuse, and what happens at end of life.

MANUFACTURING: PLASTIC COMES OUT AHEAD
Producing a paper bag requires roughly four times the energy and four times the water of producing a plastic bag, according to lifecycle assessments including studies by the UK Environment Agency and the Scottish Government. Paper production also generates more air and water pollution than plastic bag production. Because paper bags are several times heavier than plastic, they require more fuel to transport as well.

END OF LIFE: PAPER COMES OUT AHEAD
Paper is widely accepted in curbside recycling, biodegrades, and can be composted, breaking down without harmful byproducts. HDPE plastic is technically very recyclable, since it can be melted and reprocessed repeatedly, but in practice only a small fraction of plastic bags are recycled because most curbside programs do not accept them. Plastic bags that escape into the environment persist for a long time, travel easily by wind and water, endanger wildlife, and eventually break down into microplastics.

REUSE CHANGES THE MATH
Lifecycle research consistently finds that reuse is the biggest factor either way. A paper bag that gets reused a few times offsets its higher production footprint, and a plastic bag reused as a trash liner or return bag does the same. Whichever bag you stock, choosing a quality bag your customers will actually reuse is one of the most practical sustainability moves available.

What is kraft paper?
Kraft paper is a sturdy paper made from softwood pulp using the kraft pulping process, which preserves more of the wood's fiber strength than other papermaking methods. It is stronger than regular paper, with high tear resistance and durability, and is most often used in its natural brown color.

What are plastic t-shirt bags made of?
Most retail plastic bags are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a thermoplastic polymer. The bags are produced through blown film extrusion, and the handle cutout that gives them their t-shirt shape makes them easy to carry and to hang on checkout racks.

Which bag holds more weight, paper or plastic?
