PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
PPE is the foundation of any warehouse safety program. The right combination depends on the hazards in your facility. At minimum, most operations require hand, head, eye, and ear protection. OSHA's general industry standard (29 CFR 1910 Subpart I) requires employers to assess workplace hazards and provide appropriate PPE for each task.GLOVES

HEAD PROTECTION
Hard hats are required where overhead hazards, falling objects, or low clearances exist. Class E hard hats add electrical protection for facilities with exposed wiring or electrical equipment.
EYE PROTECTION
Safety goggles provide a sealed barrier for chemical splash hazards. Safety glasses cover general debris and dust in open environments. Both are required wherever eye hazards exist.
EAR PROTECTION
Earplugs and earmuffs are required above 85 dB, the OSHA action level. Manufacturing floors, presses, and packaging lines frequently exceed this threshold.
HIGH-VISIBILITY VESTS
Safety vests keep workers visible to forklift operators and vehicle traffic. ANSI Class 2 vests are required in most indoor warehouse environments with active vehicle traffic.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
Dust masks and respirators protect workers from airborne particles, chemical vapors, or fine dust. N95 masks cover most particulate hazards in general warehouse use; chemical vapors require cartridge-style respirators.
PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
Coveralls, aprons, and cut-resistant sleeves extend protection beyond the hands for tasks involving chemical exposure, heat, or sharp materials. Pair with appropriate gloves for full coverage.
FALL PROTECTION
Fall protection gear is required for workers at heights of four feet or more in general industry (OSHA 1910.28), including harnesses, lanyards, and anchor systems for elevated platforms.
SIGNAGE AND CAUTION TAPE
Clear visual communication is one of the most cost-effective safety tools in any facility. OSHA requires specific signage for hazardous areas, chemical storage, electrical panels, and emergency equipment. Beyond compliance, good signage reduces errors, reinforces PPE habits, and helps visitors navigate safely.OSHA defines sign formats by hazard level: Danger signs (red) for immediate hazards, Warning signs (orange) for potential hazards, and Caution signs (yellow) for lower-level risks.

Safety signs cover hazard warnings, PPE requirements, restricted areas, emergency exit locations, chemical storage notices, and equipment operating instructions. In some cases signage is a regulatory requirement, not just a best practice.
Caution tape is the fastest way to mark a temporary hazard. Yellow and black signals a general hazard; red and white barricade tape indicates no-entry areas. Use for wet floors, maintenance zones, out-of-service equipment, and pedestrian exclusion areas during forklift operations.
Permanent floor marking tape defines pedestrian walkways, forklift lanes, storage zones, and equipment clearance areas. Standard conventions: yellow for traffic lanes, white for storage areas, red for hazards or fire equipment, green for first aid locations.
WET FLOOR SIGNS
Keep several accessible near cleaning supply stations, dock doors, and restroom areas. A slip-and-fall on an unmarked wet floor is one of the most common and most preventable workplace injuries.
FLOOR SAFETY
Slips, trips, and falls are consistently among the most common warehouse injuries. Floor safety products address the root causes: wet or slippery surfaces, worker fatigue from standing, and unmarked hazards.Anti-fatigue mats are for workstations where employees stand for extended periods. The cushioned surface reduces strain on feet, legs, and lower back. Common locations include packing stations, assembly lines, and inspection areas.
Anti-slip and absorbent mats are for entries, dock doors, and wet areas. They capture moisture and debris from footwear before it spreads across the rest of the floor and creates a broader slip hazard.
Wheel chocks prevent trucks and trailers from rolling away from dock doors during loading and unloading. Vehicle creep during forklift entry and exit is a serious hazard. Place chocks behind wheels any time a vehicle is at a dock; never rely on parking brakes alone.
Dock plates and levelers bridge the gap between the facility floor and the truck bed. Unsecured dock plates are a fall and tip hazard for both workers and forklifts. Always verify dock plates are seated and secured before driving equipment across them.
SPILL CONTROL
Liquid spills create immediate slip hazards and, depending on the material, environmental or chemical hazards as well. Having the right cleanup products staged and accessible is a regulatory requirement for certain materials and a best practice for all operations.UNIVERSAL SPILL KITS
Universal spill kits contain absorbent pads, socks, and pillows capable of handling oils, coolants, solvents, and water-based liquids. Available from 5-gallon bucket kits for small spills to overpack drum kits for larger incidents. Stage near chemical storage, machinery with hydraulic reservoirs, and dock areas.
ABSORBENTS AND PADS
Granular absorbent works well on concrete floors for large surface-area spills; absorbent pads work best for contained leaks under machinery. Oil-only (white) for petroleum-based liquids, universal (gray) for most liquids including water, hazmat (yellow) for aggressive chemicals and acids.
SWEEPING COMPOUND
Sweeping compound is applied before sweeping to capture dust, fine particles, and light liquid contamination. It prevents debris from becoming airborne and reduces the number of passes needed to clear a spill. Use for routine floor cleanup and minor non-hazardous spills.
FIRST AID AND EYE WASH STATIONS
First aid and emergency response equipment must be accessible, maintained, and known to all workers. OSHA 1910.151 requires that first aid supplies be readily available and that a trained person be available to render first aid.FIRST AID KITS
First aid kits must be fully stocked, in a known location, and checked regularly. For larger facilities, stage multiple kits throughout so no worker is more than a short walk away. A basic industrial kit should include bandages, gauze pads, antiseptic wipes, gloves, burn treatment, eye pads, and an emergency blanket. ANSI/ISEA Z308.1 defines kit contents by class. Assign someone to inspect and restock monthly. A depleted kit provides a false sense of security.
EYE WASH STATIONS
Eye wash stations are required wherever workers may be exposed to injurious substances (OSHA 1910.151), including cleaning chemicals, solvents, and lubricants. ANSI Z358.1 requires a plumbed station within 10 seconds of travel from any hazard area. Portable units are acceptable where plumbing is unavailable but must be inspected and refilled on schedule. Immediate flushing significantly reduces the severity of eye injuries from chemical contact. Train all workers on station locations before an exposure occurs. ELECTRICAL AND EQUIPMENT SAFETY
Electrical hazards and moving equipment are among the most serious risk categories in a warehouse or manufacturing facility. The right products reduce exposure and help ensure equipment is used safely.EXTENSION CORDS
Industrial extension cords must be heavy-duty, rated for the equipment being powered, and visually distinct from the floor to prevent tripping. Look for high-visibility colors (orange or yellow), heavy insulation rated for your amperage draw, and grounded three-prong plugs. Never use household cords for industrial equipment. OSHA prohibits using extension cords as a substitute for permanent wiring.
LOCKOUT/TAGOUT SUPPLIES
Lockout/tagout (LOTO) equipment is required by OSHA 1910.147 wherever workers perform maintenance or service on machinery. LOTO devices physically prevent equipment from being energized while work is in progress. A complete program requires padlocks, hasps, lockout tags, and energy isolation devices appropriate for your equipment. All workers who service equipment must be trained on LOTO procedures before performing any maintenance work.
WINTER AND WEATHER SAFETY
For facilities in colder climates, outdoor and dock areas become significant hazards in winter months. Ice and snow at entrances, loading docks, and parking areas are a leading cause of slip-and-fall injuries from late fall through early spring.
ICE MELT
Ice melt products treat parking lots, loading docks, and walkways to prevent ice buildup. Calcium chloride works at the lowest temperatures and generates heat on contact. Sodium chloride is the most economical but loses effectiveness in extreme cold. Magnesium chloride is the least corrosive to concrete and safer around vegetation. COLD-WEATHER PPE
Standard work gloves and clothing do not protect against sustained cold. Insulated gloves with moisture-wicking liners prevent frostbite and maintain dexterity. Insulated high-visibility vests and jackets combine warmth with the visibility requirements of busy dock environments.

What PPE is required in a warehouse?
OSHA requires employers to perform a hazard assessment and provide PPE appropriate to the identified risks (29 CFR 1910.132). At minimum, most warehouses require hand protection, eye protection, and high-visibility vests where vehicle traffic is present. Facilities with overhead hazards, high noise, or chemical exposure will need additional PPE.
Do I need an eye wash station if I only use cleaning chemicals?
Yes. OSHA 1910.151 requires eye wash stations wherever workers may be exposed to injurious substances, which includes most industrial and commercial cleaning chemicals. A portable unit is acceptable where plumbing is not available, but it must be maintained and inspected on schedule.
What is the difference between caution tape and barricade tape?
Caution tape (yellow and black) signals a general hazard workers may pass through carefully. Barricade tape (red and white) signals a more serious danger and typically means no entry. Use caution tape for temporary slip hazards and minor work areas; use barricade tape for active construction, equipment failure, or serious hazard zones.
How often should I inspect and restock my first aid kits?
First aid kits should be checked at least monthly and restocked as items are used. Assign a specific person to this responsibility. Items with expiration dates should be replaced on schedule. Post a log sheet inside each kit to track inspections.
What type of spill kit do I need?
Choose based on the liquids in your facility. Universal spill kits handle oils, water-based liquids, coolants, and most solvents. If your facility handles acids, caustics, or other aggressive chemicals, a hazmat-rated spill kit is required. Size the kit to handle your largest foreseeable spill.
Do wheel chocks need to be used at every dock door?
Yes, whenever a truck or trailer is at a dock for loading or unloading. Vehicle creep during forklift entry and exit is a real hazard; chocks prevent the trailer from moving away from the dock while workers or equipment are inside. Never rely on the parking brake alone.
Which ice melt is safest for concrete loading docks?
Magnesium chloride is the least damaging to concrete and safer around vegetation than sodium chloride or calcium chloride. Avoid rock salt on new concrete or rebar-reinforced surfaces, as chloride penetration accelerates corrosion over time.
