BUBBLE WRAP
Bubble wrap is made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and forms a sheet of air-filled bubbles that cushion an item and protect its surface from scuffs and impact. It comes on a roll, so you cut off only what you need and wrap it directly around the product.Because it wraps around the item itself rather than just filling space, bubble wrap is the better choice when the product needs direct cushioning, not just something to keep it from sliding around the box. It is available in several bubble sizes, each suited to a different level of protection.

AIR PILLOWS
Air pillows are lightweight plastic film pockets that are inflated with air, usually right at the packing station, to fill empty space inside a box. Unlike bubble wrap, they are not meant to wrap around a product; they surround it, keeping it centered in the box and preventing it from shifting during transit.The film comes on a roll of connected chambers and is fed through a machine that inflates and seals each pocket on demand, so you only produce what you need for that shipment. Rolls are available in single-chamber and multi-chamber configurations and in a range of film materials.

AIR PILLOWS REQUIRE A MACHINE
Air pillow film has to be inflated before use, which means you need a compatible air pillow machine at the packing station. This is the main tradeoff against bubble wrap, which needs no equipment at all.
ANTI-STATIC PROTECTION
Static-sensitive electronics, such as circuit boards, hard drives, RAM, GPUs, and CPUs, need packaging that dissipates static charge rather than building it up. Both bubble wrap and air pillows are available in anti-static versions for exactly this purpose.
ANTI-STATIC BUBBLE WRAP
Looks and functions like standard bubble wrap but is treated to prevent static buildup around the wrapped item. A good option when you need to both cushion and shield an electronic component in one material.
ANTI-STATIC AIR PILLOWS AND BAGS
Anti-static air pillow film fills void space around static-sensitive items without direct wrapping. For full shielding, pair with a dedicated anti-static bag, since a fully sealed bag or pouch provides more reliable discharge protection than loose void fill alone.
SEAL IT COMPLETELY
Anti-static packaging only works as intended when fully sealed. If a bag or wrap is left open, the item can still move around inside and build up a static charge, defeating the purpose of the anti-static material.
DISPENSERS AND AIR PILLOW MACHINES
The equipment behind each material is a big part of the cost and workflow difference between them.
A bubble wrap dispenser holds the roll on sturdy casters and lets a packer pull off and cut only the length needed. It requires no power and no training beyond basic use, which is part of why bubble wrap has virtually no startup cost.
Air pillow machines inflate and seal the film as it feeds through, producing pillows on demand at the packing station. Machines range from compact, single-workstation units up to models that can supply multiple workstations at once and are programmable for different pillow sizes. Because air pillow film ships uninflated, one roll produces far more finished cushioning than the same size roll of bubble wrap, but the machine itself is an added equipment and training cost that bubble wrap does not have.
EQUIPMENT VS. NO EQUIPMENT
Bubble wrap needs only a roll and a dispenser. Air pillows need a compatible inflating machine. Higher-volume operations tend to offset the machine cost with material savings, while low-volume shippers often do better sticking with bubble wrap alone.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
Neither material is accepted in standard curbside recycling, but both have recycling and lower-impact options worth knowing about.Bubble wrap is recyclable, but only through soft plastic and film drop-off programs, not standard curbside bins.
