Bubble Wrap vs. Air Pillows: Which Is Best?

Bubble wrap rolls and inflated air pillows used for protective packaging

BUBBLE WRAP VS.
AIR PILLOWS

Everything you need to know about bubble wrap and air pillows so you can choose the right void fill and cushioning for your product, volume, and budget.

OVERVIEW

TWO WAYS TO PROTECT A SHIPMENT

Bubble wrap and air pillows are the two most common forms of protective packaging for cushioning products and filling empty space inside a box. Both do a similar job, but they get there differently, and picking the wrong one means either paying for more protection than you need or leaving fragile items to shift and break in transit.

The right choice depends on how fragile the item is, how much void space you need to fill, your shipping volume, and whether you are set up to run packaging equipment. This guide breaks down how each material works, what it is made from, and when to reach for one over the other.

SECTION 01

BUBBLE WRAP

Bubble wrap is made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and forms a sheet of air-filled bubbles that cushion an item and protect its surface from scuffs and impact. It comes on a roll, so you cut off only what you need and wrap it directly around the product.

Because it wraps around the item itself rather than just filling space, bubble wrap is the better choice when the product needs direct cushioning, not just something to keep it from sliding around the box. It is available in several bubble sizes, each suited to a different level of protection.

BEST FOR: Individually wrapping fragile items, protecting surfaces from scuffs, low-volume or occasional shipping

Bubble wrap is sized by bubble diameter. Larger bubbles hold more air and provide more cushioning depth; smaller bubbles are more compact and better suited to lighter items.

SMALL 3/16"

The most common size. A good balance of cushioning and compact storage for general-purpose wrapping.

MEDIUM 5/16"

More cushioning depth than small bubble, suited to moderately fragile items that need extra protection.

LARGE 1/2"

Deeper bubbles for heavier or more delicate items, and the size most commonly used in uninflated form to make air pillow film.

X-LARGE 3/4"

Maximum cushioning depth, reserved for the heaviest or most fragile items in the bubble wrap lineup.

SECTION 02

AIR PILLOWS

Air pillows are lightweight plastic film pockets that are inflated with air, usually right at the packing station, to fill empty space inside a box. Unlike bubble wrap, they are not meant to wrap around a product; they surround it, keeping it centered in the box and preventing it from shifting during transit.

The film comes on a roll of connected chambers and is fed through a machine that inflates and seals each pocket on demand, so you only produce what you need for that shipment. Rolls are available in single-chamber and multi-chamber configurations and in a range of film materials.

1-CHAMBER FILM

A single continuous pillow, good for filling one larger void or wrapping around a bulkier item.

4 AND 8-CHAMBER FILM

Perforated into smaller individual pillows, making it easy to tear off only what a given box needs.

RECYCLED AND VIRGIN HDPE

Standard film options ranging from virgin plastic to film made with recycled content, depending on durability and sustainability needs.

CORN STARCH AND PAPER

Compostable film options for operations prioritizing biodegradability over standard plastic film.

AIR PILLOWS REQUIRE A MACHINE

Air pillow film has to be inflated before use, which means you need a compatible air pillow machine at the packing station. This is the main tradeoff against bubble wrap, which needs no equipment at all.

SECTION 03

ANTI-STATIC PROTECTION

Static-sensitive electronics, such as circuit boards, hard drives, RAM, GPUs, and CPUs, need packaging that dissipates static charge rather than building it up. Both bubble wrap and air pillows are available in anti-static versions for exactly this purpose.

ANTI-STATIC BUBBLE WRAP

Looks and functions like standard bubble wrap but is treated to prevent static buildup around the wrapped item. A good option when you need to both cushion and shield an electronic component in one material.

ANTI-STATIC AIR PILLOWS AND BAGS

Anti-static air pillow film fills void space around static-sensitive items without direct wrapping. For full shielding, pair with a dedicated anti-static bag, since a fully sealed bag or pouch provides more reliable discharge protection than loose void fill alone.

SEAL IT COMPLETELY

Anti-static packaging only works as intended when fully sealed. If a bag or wrap is left open, the item can still move around inside and build up a static charge, defeating the purpose of the anti-static material.

SECTION 04

DISPENSERS AND AIR PILLOW MACHINES

The equipment behind each material is a big part of the cost and workflow difference between them.

BUBBLE WRAP DISPENSERS
A bubble wrap dispenser holds the roll on sturdy casters and lets a packer pull off and cut only the length needed. It requires no power and no training beyond basic use, which is part of why bubble wrap has virtually no startup cost.
AIR PILLOW MACHINES
Air pillow machines inflate and seal the film as it feeds through, producing pillows on demand at the packing station. Machines range from compact, single-workstation units up to models that can supply multiple workstations at once and are programmable for different pillow sizes. Because air pillow film ships uninflated, one roll produces far more finished cushioning than the same size roll of bubble wrap, but the machine itself is an added equipment and training cost that bubble wrap does not have.

EQUIPMENT VS. NO EQUIPMENT

Bubble wrap needs only a roll and a dispenser. Air pillows need a compatible inflating machine. Higher-volume operations tend to offset the machine cost with material savings, while low-volume shippers often do better sticking with bubble wrap alone.

SECTION 05

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

Neither material is accepted in standard curbside recycling, but both have recycling and lower-impact options worth knowing about.

Bubble wrap is recyclable, but only through soft plastic and film drop-off programs, not standard curbside bins.

Air pillow film is available with recycled content, including recycled HDPE and recycled LDPE options, reducing reliance on virgin plastic.

Corn starch and paper air pillow films are compostable, offering a lower-impact alternative to standard plastic void fill.

SECTION 06

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT VOID FILL

Use this table as a starting point. Many operations use both materials together, bubble wrap for the item itself and air pillows for the remaining space in the box.

SITUATION MATERIAL NOTES
Wrapping glassware, electronics, or individual fragile items Bubble wrap Cushions the item directly rather than just filling space around it
Filling empty space in a larger box Air pillows Keeps the item centered and prevents shifting during transit
High-volume fulfillment Air pillows Uninflated film takes up far less storage space than rolled bubble wrap
Low-volume or occasional shipping Bubble wrap No machine or training required; just a roll and a dispenser
Electronics or static-sensitive components Anti-static bubble wrap, pillows, or bags Always seal fully for reliable static protection
Sustainability-focused operations Recycled or compostable air pillow film Recycled HDPE/LDPE, corn starch, and paper film options available
Mixed box with both fragile items and empty space Bubble wrap plus air pillows Wrap the item, then fill remaining voids for full protection

SECTION 07

COMMON QUESTIONS

Answers to the questions we hear most about bubble wrap and air pillows.

Is bubble wrap or air pillows better for fragile items?
Bubble wrap is generally better for individually fragile items because it wraps directly around the product for cushioning. Air pillows are better suited to filling the remaining space in the box so the wrapped item cannot shift during transit.

Do air pillows require special equipment?
Yes. Air pillow film ships uninflated and needs a compatible air pillow machine to inflate and seal each pillow before use. Bubble wrap requires no equipment beyond an optional dispenser.

What are the different bubble wrap sizes?
Bubble wrap comes in small 3/16", medium 5/16", large 1/2", and x-large 3/4" bubble sizes. Larger bubbles provide more cushioning depth for heavier or more delicate items.

Can I use both bubble wrap and air pillows in the same box?
Yes, and many operations do. Wrap the fragile item in bubble wrap first, then use air pillows to fill any remaining empty space so the wrapped item stays centered in the box.

Is bubble wrap or air pillows more sustainable?
Both are recyclable through soft plastic film drop-off programs rather than curbside bins. Air pillow film also comes in recycled-content, corn starch, and paper varieties, giving it more lower-impact options than standard bubble wrap.

What is anti-static bubble wrap used for?
It is used to wrap and cushion static-sensitive electronics such as circuit boards, hard drives, RAM, and CPUs. It functions the same as standard bubble wrap but is treated to prevent static buildup around the wrapped item.

Which option takes up less storage space?
Air pillow film takes up significantly less storage space than bubble wrap because it ships uninflated and is only inflated to full size at the packing station.
