WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOT MELT AND ACRYLIC TAPE?
The most important difference between hot melt and acrylic tape isn't brand or thickness; it's the adhesive chemistry. Everything else follows from that.Hot melt adhesive is a thermoplastic rubber, applied during manufacturing in a molten state and cooled to form a pressure-sensitive surface. Acrylic adhesive is a water-based polymer emulsion, chemically more stable, but slower to fully bond after application.

One of the most common questions we get from customers switching tape suppliers is, "Why does this tape look different?" Usually, it's because they've moved from amber hot melt to clear acrylic or vice versa. Color is not an indicator of quality or strength. WHICH TAPE HAS STRONGER TACK AND HOLD?
These tapes behave differently from the moment they touch a surface, and that difference plays out on the packing line every day.INITIAL TACK:
Hot melt bonds on contact. The rubber adhesive is highly viscous and grabs the corrugated surface immediately, making it ideal for fast-moving packing lines where you can't wait for a bond to develop. Acrylic has moderate initial tack; the bond builds over 24–72 hours as the adhesive cures and flows into the surface texture. A freshly sealed acrylic-taped box can feel slightly loose compared to hot melt.
LONG-TERM HOLD:
Acrylic's slower cure works in its favor over time. As the adhesive flows deeper into the corrugated surface, the bond strengthens, making it better suited for extended storage. Hot melt's rubber adhesive can degrade with prolonged UV exposure or heat cycling, limiting its practical storage duration compared to acrylic.
SHEAR & STRESS RESISTANCE:
Hot melt tape generally has higher tensile strength and shear resistance. It holds up better when boxes are stacked, lifted by their flaps, shifted by forklifts, or put under sustained load. Acrylic adhesive has lower viscosity, which means it can flow under prolonged stress, a known limitation for very heavy bundles or cartons under constant pressure.
UNWIND NOISE:
Hot melt tape is actually the louder of the two. The release coat on hot melt tape produces a sharp, loud sound when pulled from the roll; this is a known characteristic of the release layer design. Acrylic tape unwinds more quietly. In a high-volume packing environment, this is worth factoring in.
APPLICATION METHOD:
Both tapes work with handheld dispensers and automated case-sealing machines. Hot melt is especially well-suited for high-speed automated lines; it unwinds consistently and bonds immediately, so boxes can be palletized right away. Both types are available in hand-grade and machine-grade rolls; make sure you're ordering the right format for your equipment.
HANDHELD DISPENSERS
Both hot melt and acrylic tape work with standard pistol-grip dispensers. Ensure the dispenser core size matches your roll. The most common core size is 3", but some rolls use a 1" core.

AUTOMATED CASE SEALERS
Hot melt performs especially well at machine speeds due to its instant tack. Acrylic runs reliably, too, but hot melt is the preferred choice for high-volume automated lines.

RECYCLED-CONTENT CORRUGATED BOXES
Boxes made with high recycled fiber content have rougher, less uniform surfaces that are harder for adhesives to grip. Hot melt or rubber-based adhesive tapes often perform better on these surfaces. If you run high-recycled-content boxes and experience tape failures at box seams, switching to a heavier-grade hot melt is typically the solution.

HOT MELT
Hot melt adhesive is thermoplastic; it stiffens in cold and can soften in sustained heat. For standard ambient warehouse conditions, it performs excellently, but cold-chain applications, refrigerated storage, or boxes that travel through large temperature swings are not good fits.
ACRYLIC
Acrylic is chemically more stable across a wider range. Its resistance to oxidation also means the adhesive doesn't break down the way rubber-based adhesives can over time, which is why acrylic has a longer shelf life and is better suited to long-term storage applications.
COLD TEMPERATURE TAPES
Some specialty hot melt formulations are engineered specifically for cold-temperature applications and service. If you need a tape that applies in a cold environment but still delivers hot melt's aggressive tack, contact us or ask your Benchmark rep for a recommendation.

HOT MELT VS. ACRYLIC TAPE: SPECS & SIZING
Once you've chosen the right tape type, specifying it correctly matters. Comparing rolls with different specs is a common source of confusion, and a common way to overpay or underperform.THICKNESS
Both tapes come in multiple thicknesses, typically 1.6, 2.0, and 3.0 mil (1 mil = 1/1000 of an inch). Thicker means more adhesive and stronger backing.
WIDTH
Most carton sealing tape comes in 2" or 3". Proper taping technique (H-method) matters more than using extra tape.
LENGTH
Rolls are commonly measured in feet or yards. Always compare cost per yard; roll lengths vary between suppliers and products.

Which tape is stronger — hot melt or acrylic?
Hot melt has higher initial tack and tensile strength, making it the better choice for heavy or overstuffed cartons and high-stress applications. Acrylic has lower shear strength but builds a stronger long-term bond over time as the adhesive cures into the surface.
How long can I store sealed boxes before the tape fails?
Hot melt is reliable for typical shipping and storage timeframes up to around 12 months. For boxes stored longer than that, or in conditions involving temperature swings, humidity, or UV exposure, acrylic is the better choice as it continues to strengthen over time and resists degradation.
Can I use hot melt tape in a cold storage or refrigerated environment?
Standard hot melt tape is not ideal for cold storage because the adhesive can stiffen and lose tack at low temperatures. Acrylic tape is typically the better choice for refrigerated or freezer applications, though specialty cold-temperature hot melt tapes are available for colder environments.
Does tape thickness (mil) affect which type I should choose?
Mil thickness is independent of adhesive type — both hot melt and acrylic come in 1.6, 2.0, and 3.0 mil. Choose the type based on your environment and application, then choose the grade based on your box weight and sealing requirements. Don't use mil thickness as a proxy for tape type.
Why does my tape look amber/tan instead of clear?
Amber or tan tape is commonly hot melt. The rubber-based adhesive is not optically clear. If you need clear tape — for retail packaging, printed boxes, or presentation purposes — use acrylic, which stays clear and won't yellow over time.
My tape isn't sticking well to my boxes. What's wrong?
The most common causes are: applying tape in temperatures outside the tape's working range, boxes with high recycled fiber content (rough surface), dirty or dusty carton surfaces, or using the wrong tape type for the environment. Hot melt or rubber-based adhesive tapes often perform better on recycled-content corrugated. If the issue persists, contact us — we can identify the right tape and grade for your specific box stock.
Which tape is better for automated case-sealing machines?
Hot melt is generally preferred for high-speed automated lines because it unwinds consistently and bonds on contact, so boxes can be palletized immediately. Acrylic also runs on machines but requires proper tension adjustment and more frequent roller maintenance.
Is hot melt or acrylic tape better for humid environments?
Acrylic tape is usually the better choice for humid environments because it is more stable against moisture and long-term environmental exposure. Hot melt tape can still work well in standard warehouse conditions, but sustained humidity may reduce bond performance depending on the carton surface and tape grade.
